Sousel, located around 40 kilometers from Portalegre, in Alto Alentejo, witnessed the rebirth of a placed abandoned for a long time. The property from the 19th century was built in accordance with the traditional architecture of the region, magnificently preserved full, of spaces of rare beauty. One feels the passion in every corner, in every detail, both in the house and the surrounding space. The Herdade do Arrepiado Velho was purchased in 2001 by the Antunes Family who right then began an ambitious project: to turn Arrepiado Velho into an asset and in a reference of excellence of Alentejo.

The Herdade gained shapes, there was an investment in quality, and the wines that are produced there do not unnoticed – beautiful image and the best organoleptic sensations. With a total area of around 100 hectares, the dam stands out in the middle of the vineyards and olive trees, in a blend of colours and quiet that only the Alentejo can offer. The combination of these characteristics makes Herdade do Arrepiado Velho to be part of the São Mamede Route – one of the three paths of Alentejo Wine Route.

It was in 2002 that the 33 hectares of vineyard were planted in a terroir that combines, in a rare mix, of schistous soils with pronounced slopes with mild temperatures and plenty of water, natural characteristics indicating great potential. Nuno Ramalho (in charge of winemaking) and enologist António Maçanita combined their knowledge, innovation and dedication, selected the varietals and created the so-called “100 point Vineyard”: red varietals – Touriga Nacional (42%), Syrah (18%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%) and Petit Verdot (16%); and the white varietals – Antão Vaz (22%), Chardonnay (8%), Viogner (30%), Verdelho (15%) and Riesling (15%). Even though there already is a project for a new winery, with greater capacity and location, the already existing is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and adequately sized to the quantity of the current production of unique, seductive wines, that are born from modern oenology, yet combined, subtlety with the respect for tradition. In the charge of the project is António Antunes and their wife Marta Neto. António take´s the leadership of the wines production and directs the sales and Marta is responsible for the Marketing and also makes the beautiful awarded labels design. They are the faces of this family business, with other crucial workers and everybody makes difference in this project were “Demand, rigour and quality” are the keywords.
